Cervical Spondyloses & Disc Prolapse

Cervical Spondyloses-
Spondyloses is a term referring to degenerative osteoarthritis of the joints between the centra of the spinal vertebrae and/or neural foramina. In this condition the interfacetal joints are not involved. If severe, it may cause pressure on nerve roots with subsequent sensory and/or motor disturbances, such as painparaesthesia, or muscle weakness in the limbs.
When the space between two adjacent vertebrae narrows, compression of a nerve root emerging from the spinal cord may result in radiculopathy (sensory and motor disturbances, such as severe pain in the neck, shoulder, arm, back, and/or leg, accompanied by muscle weakness). Less commonly, direct pressure on the spinal cord (typically in the cervical spine) may result in myelopathy, characterized by global weakness, gait dysfunction, loss of balance, and loss of bowel and/or bladder control. The patient may experience a phenomenon of shocks (paresthesia) in hands and legs because of nerve compression and lack of blood flow. If vertebrae of the neck are involved it is labelled cervical spondylosis. Lower back spondylosis is labelled lumbar spondylitis
Due to the constant use  wear and tear occurs to the intervertebral (7 nos) cartilages of the cervical spine. As a result the neck becomes stiff and rigid. There is a difficulty in turning the head. Intially the symptoms of cervical Spondyloses could be tingling sensations in the hands. Pain in the shoulder area and a dull ache in the arms especially on lifting and could also be the initial symptoms of the disease.

In the initial stages these disease can be cured by medication. Certain medicated oils administered internally along with decoctions are  very beneficial in the disease. Massages, fomentation and nasyam are also indicated in the disease.Use of cervical collar along with treatment greatly increases the prognosis of the disease. Pillows should be avoided  and certain exercises to strengthen the neck muscles should be practiced.

Disc Prolapse - Prolapse of the intervertebral disc causes tremendous pain. Complete prolapse of the disc causes the disc to press on the nerve roots. This causes pain and even paralysis in the areas supplied by the nerves. Complete prolapse is an emergency and should be treated surgically.

In General practice more cases of partial prolapse are encountered than complete prolapse. Such cases of partial disc  prolapse, with associated signs like numbness and pain are treated on an in-patient bases.Traction and oil massages are   the mainstay of treatment. Marma treatment is of prime importance in disc prolpase cases. The partially prolpased discs can be reinstated to their original position using spine manipulative massages. These massages are delicate and are performed by experts. X rays and scans are examined to see the extend of prolapse  before the actual process of marma massage is done. Internal medicines are also prescribed.
